Hot Matcha Latte Recipe: How to Make the Perfect Matcha Latte at Home
When the weather cools down, there's nothing quite like wrapping your hands around a warm matcha latte. Smooth, creamy and naturally energising, a hot matcha latte is the perfect alternative to coffee. Thanks to ceremonial-grade matcha, you'll enjoy a rich, vibrant flavour and steady energy without relying on added sugar.
If you're wondering whether to enjoy your matcha hot or iced, read our Hot Matcha vs Iced Matcha: Which Is Better? guide to discover the benefits of each before trying this recipe.
In this guide, we'll show you exactly how to make a café-quality hot matcha latte in just five minutes.
- 3g matcha
- 30ml warm water (70–80°C)
- 140ml milk of your choice
- Bamboo whisk (chasen)
- Matcha bowl or mug
How to Make a Hot Matcha Latte

Step 1: Sift Your Matcha
Sift 3g of matcha into your bowl or mug. This simple step removes clumps and creates a smoother, creamier latte.

Pour 30ml of warm water over the matcha. The ideal temperature is 70–80°C. Water that's too hot can make matcha taste more bitter.

Using a bamboo whisk, whisk in a quick "W" or "M" motion until the matcha is smooth and a fine foam forms on top.
Step 4: Heat Your Milk
Warm 140ml of milk until steaming, but don't let it boil. If you enjoy a café-style latte, froth the milk before pouring.

Slowly pour the warm milk into the matcha. Give it a gentle stir and enjoy immediately.
Every Maison Matcha blend starts with premium ceremonial-grade matcha from Uji, Japan. The difference is simply the flavour experience.

A: No. Boiling water can make ceremonial matcha taste bitter. Aim for water between 70°C and 80°C for the smoothest flavour.
Q: Which milk is best for a hot matcha latte?
A: Full cream milk creates a rich, creamy texture, while oat milk is naturally sweet and one of the most popular choices.
Q: Can I drink hot matcha every day?
A: Absolutely. Many people enjoy matcha daily as part of their morning or afternoon routine thanks to its naturally occurring antioxidants, L-theanine and caffeine.
Q: Should I drink matcha hot or iced?
A: Both are delicious. Hot matcha is perfect for colder mornings and cosy afternoons, while iced matcha is refreshing during warmer weather.
